Support Systems, INC. is a dedicated, compassionate and competent team of individuals who want to make a difference in people’s lives by providing quality and caring mental health services to the community. It is our ultimate goal that those suffering with serious mental illness, intellectual disabilities or substance abuse issues are able to achieve and maintain stability, independence and success in the home and/or community. It is also important to us that these individuals live a better quality of life and experience what it means to have someone truly care for them and commit to helping them succeed.

We are committed to assisting individuals with living the best life possible, free from other more restrictive interventions and one that is productive and happy. All of these things can be accomplished through the intricate system of support that Support Systems, INC. has designed and offers to the Roanoke, Rocky Mt/Martinsville, Danville and Lynchburg communities.

Available Services

Individuals must demonstrate a clinical need for the service arising from a condition due to mental, behavioral, or emotional illnesses, which results in significant functional impairments in major life activities.

The individual must meet ALL of the following criteria:
  • Mental Health Skills Building Services
  • Mental Health Skills Building Services

    Support Systems, Inc. provides mental health services for adults who suffer from serious mental, behavioral or emotional illness that results in significant functional impairments in major life activities.  Training and supports are provided to enable individuals to achieve and maintain community stability and independence in the most appropriate, least restrictive environment.  Skill building services are rehabilitative in nature and help individuals to acquire and maintain the greatest levels of independence possible through training in areas such as daily living skills, health and safety, appropriate behavior, use of community resources, medication management, and self-monitoring of personal health, nutrition and physical condition.


    Services are provided by a minimum of a Qualified Mental Health Professional, with a combination of a bachelors level education and one or more years of experience in the field of mental health services.  Supervision is ongoing both by a monthly written supervision and daily interaction with supervisors.   Licensed Mental Health Professionals shall provide ongoing assessment, quarterly ISP reviews, documentation of continued need of services, coordination of services and overall clinical supervision.


    Skill Building Services shall include:

    Goal directed training in the areas of daily living, money management, medication management, accessing community resources, appropriate use of social skills/personal support systems and decreasing isolative behavior, symptom recognition and management, personal hygiene/health and safety, food preparation, and adherence to psychiatric and medical treatment plans.  



    To be eligible for Mental Health Skill Building Services individuals must:

    Demonstrate a clinical need for the service arising from a condition due to mental, behavioral, or emotional illness, which results in significant functional impairments in major life activities. The individual must be best served in the community and must meet all of the following criteria:

    1. Individual shall have a primary Axis I DSM diagnosis as discussed above;
    2. Individual shall require individualized training in acquiring basic living skills such as described above;
    3. Individual shall have a prior history of any of the following:

             a.  Psychiatric hospitalization

    b.  Residential Crisis Stabilization

    c.  Intensive Community Treatment (ICT)

    d.  Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT)

    e.  Placement in a psychiatric residential treatment facility

    f.  Temporary Detention Order (TDO)

          4.  Individual shall have had a prescription for anti-psychotic, mood stabilizing, 

        or anti-depressant medications within the 12 months prior to the 

        Assessment date.  

    **This program is currently offered in all of our locations (Roanoke/Vinton, Rocky Mount, Danville, Lynchburg and Radford/NRV) .


  • Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program: VIP ZONE
  • Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program: VIP ZONE

    The Psychosocial Rehabilitation program provides skill training, support, and encouragement to indivdiuals diagnosed with mental health disorders and intellectual delays in order to increase independent living skills, coping skills and social skills through a day treatment atmosphere for better every day functioning. The VIP ZONE participates in many beneficial and exciting activites, such as: cooking, cleaning, field trips, shopping, playing games, gardening, arts/crafts, group therapy, etc.and is offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The VIP ZONE is currently accepting new referrals for clients and would love for you to be a part of their team! 

    *This program is currently offered in our Roanoke/Vinton office, but will be offered in our Rocky Mount office soon!

  • Crisis Stabilization Services
  • Crisis Stabilization Services

    Crisis Stabilization Services assists individuals with acute crisis situations.  This service provides the individual with assistance through counseling, psychiatric care, therapeutic training/classes, support and rehabilitation in order to stabilize individuals and help them to manage symptoms and daily stressors.  Individuals are eligible for crisis stabilization if they meet one of the following:

    They are experiencing a marked deduction in psychiatric, adaptive or behavioral functioning, OR

    They are experiencing extreme increase in emotional distress, OR

    The individual needs continuous intervention to maintain stability OR

    The individual is causing harm to self or others

    Individuals must also be at risk of at least one of the following:

    Psychiatric hospitalization, Disruption of community status or causing harm to self or others

    **This program is currently offered in our Roanoke/Vinton and Lynchburg locations.

  • Outpatient Counseling
  • Outpatient Counseling

    At Support Systems, we are committed to providing significant and beneficial emotional support through outpatient counseling. In order to qualify for outpatient counseling services, the following must exist: 

    The individual must show significantly impaired emotional stability. The individual must be experiencing increased emotional issues as a result of his/her mental health diagnosis and/or traumatic events that have occurred within his or her life. The client must show the ability to participate in discussion and benefit from assistance with emotional stability and processing feelings. 

    **Outpatient Counseling is currently offered in our Roanoke/Vinton and Rocky Mount areas. This service will be offered in all four areas in the near future and we are excited for this opportunity. 



  • Payee Services
  • Payee Services

    Support Systems offers Payee services to individuals who need assistance with managing their monthly social security checks.  Payee services are services that allow Support Systems to receive your monthly social security disability check and assist with paying all your monthly bills and expenses.  Our payee representative will ensure that individuals needs are met including housing, food, transportation, etc. and then divide whats left into weekly spending checks to cover incidentals and things that they might want to purchase.  Payee clients never have to worry about overdrawn accounts, past due bills, or over-extending their budgets.  Support Systems is bonded and committed to providing payee services honestly, openly and with dignity.  Individuals can receive monthly statements of their spending and our payee representative will  provide money management counseling and is always looking for ways to help save the client money.

    **This service is currently offered in all of our locations (Roanoke/Vinton, Lynchburg, Danville, Rocky Mount and Radford/NRV).

  • Project Support: Non-profit Organization
  • Project Support: Non-profit Organization

    Project Support is a new non-profit leg of Support Systems, INC that will offer financial support to vulnerable populations who are unable to receive assistance through insurance and other financial resources. Our own created Project Support in order to benefit individuals diagnosed with severe mental illness who do not qualify for insurance. Project Support will assist with ensuring that basic needs are met and will also provide funds for those who require mental health services, but do not have insurance or other means of receiving what is needed.

    *Project Support is currently seeking and working toward gaining grants, participating in fundraisers, and being involved in other community based projects.
